If you can stick to the prepackaged meals and add only healthy foods, research to support the program suggests you will lose weight. The meals you'll eat are good for you, nutrition-wise. It can be harder to make the transition to eating \"real food\" when you get closer to your weight-loss goal and don't rely on meals already made for you.

Private equity firm Kainos Capital announced a deal Monday to acquire weight-management and nutrition company Nutrisystem from Tivity Health for $575 million. The deal is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter. The purchase price is less than half what Tivity paid to buy Nutrisystem, in a deal announced less than two years ago, and closed just 19 months ago. Tivity's stock shot up 7.7% in premarket trading. \"We look forward to working with the Nutrisystem management team to achieve the full potential of this incredible brand similar to what we accomplished with SlimFast,\" said Bob Sperry, a partner at Kainos. Tivity had acquired Nutrisystem in a deal valued at $1.3 billion, that was announced in December 2018 and that closed in March 2019. Tivity's stock has dropped 24.2% year to date through Friday, while the S&P 500 SPX, +1.42% has gained 7.8%.

Nutrisystem said in a statement: \\\"'GMA's' testing is unscientific and should not be relied upon by anyone as representative of how consumers will think one product tastes compared to another one....our foods are a balance of nutritional value, affordability, convenience and results.\\\"
In addition to taste, another important factor is price. We asked all three companies for the average price range of 28 days worth of their food, three meals a day. While it is possible you will pay more for these diet foods, these are the prices reported by the companies, based on the plans consumers most often choose. Some of the diet plans suggest you supplement their meals with fresh produce and dairy and those costs are not included here. Shipping is included, where applicable.

Smart advertising and relentless data-crunching fuel this lean company. AT&T runs its computers. An outside logistics outfit operates its five warehouses. A rotating cast of companies, including Hormel and Truitt Bros., make the food. In the past NutriSystem worked through franchises and retailers. Now it has no grocery stores or other middlemen, much less costly weigh-in centers, to eat up profits.
Chicago billionaire Michael Heisley bought NutriSystem out of Chapter 11 \"for almost nothing,\" he says, but ended up driving it further into the ground. He hired motivational screamer Susan (\"Stop the Insanity!\") Powter, whose ads failed to lift sales. In 1996 he converted the centers into clinics for doctors to prescribe fen-phen diet drugs, only to run into the little problem that these drugs can cause fatal heart problems. Heisley avoided liability, but more than half the 291 franchise centers went under. He compounded his ills by selling \"herbal fen-phen,\" a mixture of Saint-John's-wort and ephedra, which brought Heisley $2 million a month in profits until the Food & Drug Administration stopped him. Other ideas--Mary Kay-like sales reps and Johnson & Johnson -sponsored \"wellness centers\"--went nowhere.
